SBU Men Travel to Maryville to Take on NW Missouri

Bolivar, Mo. - The Bearcats hit the road to take on the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri. SBU looks to continue their way up the MIAA rankings and push towards post-season play. Fans can catch the game live on KBFL 99.9, or find live video online at www.AmericaOne.com.

The Coaches and the All-Time Series

SBU head coach Jeff Guiot continues in his seventh season on the Bearcat bench, where he has won three MIAA regular season titles, and compiled a 134-58 (.698) record. Coach Guiot has led the 'Cats to an MIAA Tournament appearance each season, and three NCAA Tournament appearnaces. Last season, SBU won 20 games for the third consecutive season, marking the first time in the history of the program the feat has been accomplished.

Ben McCollum is in his second season as the Northwest Missouri State men's Basketball head coach. McCollum was the second youngest active head coach in the Division II during the 2009-10 season. Coach McCollum is the 20th coach in the history of the Bearcats' men's basketball and holds a 12-15 total record for the 2009-10 season.

Northwest Missouri State leads SBU in the all-time series, 31-18. However, SBU has won the last seven meetings.

Last Time Out for the Bearcats


SBU lost a tough game to Nebraska-Omaha, 74-81, this afternoon in Bolivar. SBU was lead in scoring by senior forward, Kurt Koenig.

Koenig scored 17 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in the loss. This is the second straight game in which Koenig was the Bearcats leading scorer. Junior guard Ryan Dougherty had a great game, putting up 15 points and collecting four steals. Sophomore forward Stephen Cotten grabbed 11 rebounds and scored seven points for the Bearcats down low. “We executed pretty well and hit some shots,” head coach Jeff Guiot commented after the loss.

As a team, SBU shot 42.2% from the field, 32.0% from beyond the arc, and a season high 92.3% from the stripe. The Bearcats outrebounded the Mavericks 38-37, and SBU's bench outscored UNO's 30-13.

• As a team, SBU is ranked 2nd in the Nation for 3-point field goals made per game, averaging 11.1 per game.

• Junior guard Ryan Dougherty is the leading scorer for the Bearcats averaging 14.0 points per game, He also leads the Bearcats in field goal made (5.0 p/g), and total assists (79).

• Junior forward Robson Memnon along with sophomore forward Steven Cotten are the inside prescene for the Bearcats. The big men average a combined 15.8 points per game and 10.4 rebounds per game.

• Senior Kurt Koenig lead the Bearcats in scoring for the second consecutive game, posting 17 points in the loss against Nebraska-Omaha.

• Freshman Lane Barlow, along with freshman Zach Kleine continue to make an impact for the Bearcats. The freshman duo average a combined 10.2 points per game.

• SBU is 11-15 overall and 8-12 in the conference. The Bearcats are ninth in the MIAA standings, and average 80.3 points per game (4th in the MIAA).

Scouting the Bearcats

Northwest Missouri State is currently ranked tenth in the MIAA with an overall record of 9-15 (7-13 MIAA). NWMSU averages 68.6 points per game (12th in the MIAA). The Bearcats also average 32.6 rebounds per game (10th in the MIAA) and 13.2 assists per game (11th in the MIAA). The Bearcats defense holds opponents to 67.8 points per game (1st in MIAA).

Sophomore guard DeShaun Cooper is the Bearcats' leading scorer, averaging 16.4 points per game. Cooper also averages 2.6 rebounds per game and 5.0 assists per game.
