Hays, Kan. - The Bearcat women lost a tough match-up against Fort Hays State 58-78 in Hays, Kansas on Wednesday night. The Bearcats had three women score in double figures in the loss. "I was proud the last five minutes," head coach J.C. Carter stated about his team. "I was glad to see they kept playing hard."
Even though it was a tough loss for the Bearcats, there were still many positives to be drawn from the game. Freshman
Tanis Spani posted a career high 11 points in 29 minutes played in Wednesday's contest. "She's a competitor," coach Carter said about Spani. "She shoots with a lot of confidence, and needs to continue to shoot with confidence for us in the future."
Junior
LaKendra Smith scored 11 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Bearcats. This marks her first double-double on the season, only the third Bearcat to accomplish this landmark this season. Junior guard
Jaquavia Couch was SBU's leading scorer with 14 points while also pulling down 5 rebounds.
As a team, SBU shot 35.5% from the field and 25.9% from beyond the arc. The Bearcats were able to collect 9 steals, and dish out 13 assists.
SBU returns home to face Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday February 19, 2011. The game is set to tip-off at 1:00 p.m, and will be aired live on MIAA Network T.V. Fans are encouraged to wear white, and help cheer their Bearcats on.
