SBU Men Look to Extend Home Winning Streak to 5 Against Washburn

- The Bearcats host the Ichabods and look to extend their home game winning streak to five games as SBU approaches the MIAA tournament, and look to continue to climb up the MIAA rankings. Fans can catch the game live on KBFL 99.9, or find live video online at www.AmericaOne.com.

The Coaches and the All-Time Series

SBU head coach Jeff Guiot continues in his seventh season on the Bearcat bench, where he has won three MIAA regular season titles, and compiled a 134-58 (.698) record. Coach Guiot has led the 'Cats to an MIAA Tournament appearance each season, and three NCAA Tournament appearnaces. Last season, SBU won 20 games for the third consecutive season, marking the first time in the history of the program the feat has been accomplished.

Bob Chipman starts his 32nd season at the helm of the Ichabods basketball program. Chipman is one of college basketballs' winnigest coaches, he is 678-278 (.709) overall and has 437 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA. Coach Chipman was NAIA national champion in the 1986-87 season, he was also NCAA national finalist in the 2001-01 season.

Washburn leads the all-time series against SBU 29-15.

Last Time Out for the Bearcats

The SBU men were able to push their home game win streak to 4 with a victory over Emporia State, 79-66 in Bolivar on Saturday night. SBU was impressive on both ends of the court, leading by as many as 22 in the second half. “I'm proud of how our guys bounced back after the Truman game” head coach Jeff Guiot stated of his team, “tonight was a great effort.”

The Bearcats had 4 players in double figures, and were once again lead by a spectacular performance by Ryan Dougherty. “Ryan had a pretty impressive night” coach Guiot said of his junior guard. Dougherty scored a game high 17 points, had 5 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals, and did not commit a turnover. Dougherty shot 70.0% from the field, and 50.0% from beyond the arc. Kurt Koening added 16 points, his 7th double digit performance in the last 9 games, and grabbed 7 rebounds. “Tonight I thought Kurt had one of his better games” coach Guiot stated, “defensively he played well and he lead our team in rebounding.”

Complimenting Dougherty and Koenig were the big men down low. Robson Memnon had a career high 15 points, while Stephen Cotten scored 10 points and had 6 rebounds.

Coach Guiot was happy with how his team performed, and is optimistic about the remainder of their season: “We have a bunch of guys that can bust their tail off and be unselfish. When they do that they can beat anyone.”

• As a team, SBU is ranked 2nd in the Nation for 3-point field goals made per game, averaging 11.5 per game.

• Junior guard Ryan Dougherty is the leading scorer for the Bearcats averaging 14.7 points per game, He also leads the Bearcats in field goal made (5.3 p/g), and total assists (67).

• Junior forward Robson Memnon along with sophomore forward Steven Cotten are the inside prescene for the Bearcats. The big men average a combined 14.9 points per game and 10.0 rebounds per game.

• Junior Nick James holds the second highest spot in the MIAA for three point field goal percentage at .451, while Dougherty holds the 2nd spot in the assist to turnover ratio (2.1).

• Freshman Lane Barlow, along with freshman Zach Kleine continue to make an impact for the Bearcats. The freshman duo average a combined 11.1 points per game.

• SBU is 11-11 overall and 8-8 in the conference. The Bearcats are sixth in the MIAA standings, and average 80.3 points per game (4th in the MIAA).

Scouting the Ichabods


Washburn is currently ranked fourth in the MIAA, with an overall record of 13-7 (10-6 MIAA). ESU averages 77.3 points per game (6th in the MIAA) with a field goal percentage of .485 (3rd in the MIAA). The Hornets also average 33.5 rebounds per game (8th in the MIAA) and 18.2 assists per game (2nd in the MIAA).

Senior forward Logan Stutz is the Ichabods' and MIAA leading scorer, averaging 20.3 points per game. Stutz also has the 2nd highest shooting percentage in the nation, at 70.3% and averages a team high 6.6 rebounds per game.
