SBU Men Claim First MIAA Victory Against Emporia State, 82-80

- The Southwest Baptist University men's basketball team claimed their first MIAA victory in exciting fashion on Saturday afternoon when they defeated the Hornets of Emporia State, 82-80. The Bearcats had four in double figures in the victory.

The game was relatively close throughout the entire contest, with neither team leading by more than seven points. The Bearcats went into halftime with a 38-36 lead, and were able to pull off a thrilling 82-80 victory. The Bearcats would be down by as many as seven in the second half before taking the lead with two minutes to go in the contest. The Bearcats played outstanding defense in the final two minutes to secure the victory.

The Bearcats had four players in double figures with Ryan Dougherty and Daveion Zellner leading the way with 18 points apiece. Preston Guiot added 16 points, five assists, and a couple of steals for SBU while Robson Memnon gave SBU 11 points and pulled down 9 rebounds.

As a team, the Bearcats shot 46.8% from the floor, 24.0% from beyond the arc, and 75.0% from the free throw line. SBU was dominate in the paint, outscoring the Hornets 38-26. There were 17 lead changes during the game, with each team leading by as many as seven.

"Our kids have been working hard", head coach Jeff Guiot commented. "Our hearts in the right spot and it's nice to get a win against a very quality Emporia State team. Zellner has improved all year long and is gradually getting better and better. Some of his leadership skills are really starting to take place with our big guys."

The Bearcats will be back in action on Tuesday, January 3 when they host Washburn University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
