Bolivar, Mo. - The Bearcats received a nice boost with the return of
LaKendra Smith and
Jacqui Zelenka Saturday afternoon in the 80-50 win over Oklahoma Wesleyan. The Bearcats scored a season high 80 points in the game with four Bearcats scoring in double figures.
The Bearcats were dominate throughout the entire game, jumping out to an early 19-4 lead, and never looked back as they cruised on to a 80-50 victory over the Lady Eagles.
Chasity Prince was the leading scorer for the Bearcats, giving SBU 16 points, including 13 in the first half.
Jacqui Zelenka also added 14 points and 4 rebounds in her return to the field, with
Ashlee Pitts scoring a career high 13 points and
Kaitlan Cramer added 13 points in the victory.
As a team, SBU shot a season high 55.8% from the field, 47.1% from beyond the arc, and 82.4% from the free throw line. The Bearcats forced 21 Lady Eagle turnovers, had 13 steals, and outrebounded the Lady Eagles 36-28.
"I thought our kids played really well," head coach Todd Voss commented after the victory. "I was really proud of our effort. The first half was great, and I thought we finished the game well. I feel like we are starting to buy into the type of defense we want to play and our defensive approach. I am very pleased with our defense and I felt it set the tone for us. I thought our team really stepped up, and our bench scoring was great. I feel like our team is in a good place, and the chance for us to build some momentum off of this game, and I feel like we are going to right direction. Missouri Southern will be a good opportunity for us, and a good test."
The Bearcats will look to continue to build upon the momentum they gained from this game when they travel to Joplin, Missouri to face the Lions of Missouri Southern on Monday, December 19. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. from Joplin.
