Hays, Kan. - The SBU Bearcats Soccer team came away with their first conference victory of the season on Tuesday, defeating Fort Hays 3-1. The Bearcats scored a season high three goals coming off of two assists in the contest.
The Bearcats were able to get on the scoreboard first when a Hays defender shanked the ball off her foot, over their goalie's head, and into the net to give SBU an early 1-0 lead. Hays would respond, by scoring a goal of their own and tying the game up at 1-1. At the 39:10 mark, Jade Barnden hit a cross from Caitlyn Seurig into the net to give SBU a 2-1 lead. Only 30 seconds later, SBU put its third goal of the game in the net.
Marene Gomez hit a header into the net from Barnden to put SBU up 3-1. The second half was a defensive battle, with neither team scoring a goal.
As a team SBU outshot the Tigers 14-13 with nine shots on goal, compared to six from Hays. With the victory SBU moves to 2-7-2 on the year, and 1-2-1 in the MIAA.
SBU will be back in action on Thursday, October 6th when they host Missouri Southern at 4:00 p.m.
