TOPEKA, Kan. – For the second straight game, the SBU Bearcats women's team played well against a nationally-ranked, top-ten team. The Bearcats came up on the short end, however, 89-73 against the Lady Blues of Washburn in an MIAA matchup.
Ashleigh Gallio lead SBU with 20 points, and dished out a team-leading 6 assists.
Jacqui Zelenka added 17 points for the Bearcats.
Whitney Malone scored 13 on 5-7 from the field, and led her team in rebounds with 8. SBU shot 33.3% from the three-point line, but couldn't overcome the inside play of Washburn.
SBU's head coach, JC Carter, was pleased with his team's performance on the offensive end of the floor.
“We've put together two of our best offensive games of the year,” said Carter. “Washburn is a good team, but we are playing with confidence. Coach McHenry does a good job with his team here, but I can't complain with our effort tonight. Our offense was good, we just gave up too many points to this team tonight.”
Overall, Carter's thoughts turned toward his team's progress, and the rest of the season.
“We're improving every game, we just need to lock things down on defense. This team is doing some good things. Discipline will be the key for us to finish strong.”
SBU heads back to Bolivar on Saturday night, January 8, to face Fort Hays State. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30.
