THE OPENING TIP

THE COACHES AND THE ALL-TIME SERIES
SBU head coach Jeff Guiot continues in his seventh season on the Bearcat bench, where he has won three MIAA regular season titles, and compiled a 134-58 (.698) record. Coach Guiot has led the 'Cats to an MIAA Tournament appearance each season, and three NCAA Tournament appearnaces. Last season, SBU won 20 games for the third consecutive season, marking the first time in the history of the program the feat has been accomplished.
Entering his 22nd season as head coach at Missouri Southern, Robert Corn has guided the Lions to 17 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Tournament births, 12 in a row, and two trips to the NCAA Tournament.
The Lions lead the all-time series against the Bearcats 42-40. However, SBU has won 9 of the last 10 meetings, and are 10-3 against Missouri Southern in the Coach Guiot era.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BEARCATS
Bolivar, Mo. - The SBU Bearcats (9-9, 6-6 MIAA) defeated the Lincoln Blue Tigers 78-62 tonight at Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar. The Bearcats were lead by junior
Ryan Dougherty and sophomore
Stephen Cotten. Dougherty scored a game high 23 points off of 9 of 15 shooting from the field, and Cotten posted SBU's first double-double of the season scoring 11 points and grabbing a career high 14 rebounds.
Along with Dougherty and Cotten, senior
Kurt Koenig and freshman Zach Kliene scored in double figures, Koenig with 13 points, and Kliene with 12 points. Freshman
Dalton Kelley received his first start of his collegiate career, and responded well. “Kelley was solid” head coach Jeff Guiot stated after the game, “he is going to get better and better with time and experience. Both freshman were very solid tonight on both ends of the court.”
QUICK HITS
• Sophomore forward Stephen Cotton produced the first Bearcats double-double on the season Tuesday (Jan. 25) scoring 11 points and grabbing a career high 14 rebounds.
• Junior guard
Ryan Dougherty is the leading scorer for the Bearcats averaging 14.9 points per game, He also leads the Bearcats in field goal made (5.3 p/g), and minutes played per game (28.8 p/g).
• Junior forward
Robson Memnon along with Cotten are the inside prescene for the Bearcats. The big men average a combined 14.4 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game.
• The Bearcats have three of the top five best three-point shooters in the MIAA. Zach Kliene holds the highest position (.482),
Nick James holds the fourth spot (.476), and
Tomas Brock holds the fifth spot in the MIAA (.444).
• James, along with
Zach Kleine continue to make an impact for the Bearcats. The freshman duo average a combined 13.2 points per game.
• SBU is 9-9 overall and 6-6 in the conference. The Bearcats are ninth in the MIAA standings, and average 81.4 points per game (3rd in the MIAA).
SCOUTING THE LIONS
Missouri Southern is currently ranked first in the MIAA, with an overall record of 15-2 (11-2 MIAA). MSSU averages 82.5 points per game (2nd in the MIAA) with a field goal percentage of .495 (2nd in the MIAA). The Lions also average 35.8 rebounds per game (6th in the MIAA), 17.5 assists (3rd in the MIAA), and 11.2 steals per game (1st in the MIAA).
Junior guard Jason Adams is the Lions' leading scorer averaging 18.9 points per game. Adams also averages 3.1 assists per game, 6.1 rebounds per game, and averages a team high 15.3 field goal attempts per game.
