THE OPENING TIP: After beating Northwest Mo. State last Saturday (Jan. 15) and breaking a five game losing streak the Bearcats travel to Warrensburg Mo, to play the UCM Mules. Fans can catch the game live on KBFL 99.9, or find live video online at www.AmericaOne.com.
THE COACHES AND ALL-TIME SERIES
SBU head coach Jeff Guiot continues in his seventh season on the Bearcat bench, where he has won three MIAA regular season titles, and compiled a 134-58 (.698) record. Coach Guiot has led the 'Cats to an MIAA Tournament appearance each season, and three NCAA Tournament appearnaces. Last season, SBU won 20 games for the third consecutive season, marking the first time in the history of the program the feat has been accomplished.
Kim Anderson enters his ninth season as the head coach of the UCM Mules. Holding a impressive 185-63 record, coach Anderson has lead the Mules to three MIAA tournament titles. He is also the only coach in the history of UCM to take the Mules to the final four tournament twice. Last season the Mules finished their season with a 27-4 record, taking the MIAA regular season title for the first time since 1984.
The Mules lead the all-time series against the Bearcats 22-32.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BEARCATS
Southwest Baptist defeated Northwest Missouri State in the battle of the Bearcats at Meyer Sports Center, 73-71. SBU moves to 8-8 (5-5 MIAA) on the year, while Northwest Missouri drops to 4-10 (2-8 MIAA).
Ryan Dougherty lead the Bearcats and continued his strong play by scoring a game high 22 points on 8 of 11 shooting from the field. Dougherty also grabbed 7 rebounds, and dished out 3 assists in the win. Along with the strong performance by Dougherty,
Lane Barlow added 12 points,
Robson Memnon scored 9 points, and
Kurt Koenig and
Stephen Cotten both contributed 8 points.
The Bearcats, however, played the game without their starting point guard,
Tomas Brock. “Without Brock the team did good. Brock is a special player, but we have guys that stepped up. The more opportunities they have, the better they'll get,” head coach Jeff Guiot stated after the game.
QUICK HITS
For the fifth time this season Junior guard
Ryan Dougherty scored more than 20 points in a game. Dougherty had 22 points against the Northwest Mo. Bearcats. He also had seven rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal.
• Dougherty is the leader scorer of the Bearcats with an average of 14.9 points per game, He also leads the Bearcats in field goal attempts (10.9 p/g), and field goals made per game (5.3 p/g).
•
Lane Barlow came off the bench strong last Saturday (Jan. 15)and scored 12 points against the Northwest Mo. Bearcats.
•The Bearcats have three of the top ten best three-point shooters in the MIAA.
Nick James holds the second position (.471), Zach Kliene comes right behind James in third (.458), and Thomas Brock holds the fifth spot in the MIAA (.444).
• Kliene, along with James continue to make an impact for the Bearcats. The freshman duo average a combined 13.4 points per game.
• SBU is 8-8 overall and 5-5 in the conference. The Bearcats are seventh in the MIAA standings, and average 83.2 points per game (2nd in the MIAA).
Scouting the Mules
The University of Central Missouri is ranked ninth in the MIAA. The Mules have a 10-7 overall record (5-6 MIAA). UCM averages 75 points per game (8th in the MIAA). The Mules also average 37.1 rebounds per game, 12.5 assists, and 5.1 steals per game.
Junior Guard Boo Hunter is the Mules' leader scorer with an average of 15.8 points per game. Hunter also averages 10.1 field goal attempts and 4.3 field goals made per game.
