DENVER, Colo. -- After jumping out to a quick start, the SBU Bearcats couldn't hold off the 10th-ranked Roadrunners of Metro State, as they fell 2-0. Freshman
Ashley Creason took a team-high five shots, but was unable to hit the back of the net. Freshman keeper
Paige Hemphill made seven saves while facing 22 shots in her collegiate debut.
The Bearcats took control early in the match, with
Brenna Lacaillade,
Lindsey Boden, and Creason taking shots in the opening six minutes. In the 23rd minute, the Roadrunners got on the board with a goal from Taylor Nicholls. From that point until the end of the half, SBU managed just two shots, including one of the 'Cats two shots on goal, from junior midfielder
Kelly Isaac.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Metro State struck again, in the form of Nicholls' second goal of the game. Just over a minute later, Creason had a breakaway chance to get the Bearcats back in the game, but the shot from in the box went wide.
The Roadrunners took control of the game from then on, outshooting the Bearcats 13-3 in the final forty minutes. Metro State also led in shots on goal, 9-2, and corner kicks, 5-0.
"We played well at times, but not consistently for 90 minutes," said head coach
Rob Podeyn. "Metro was a very good team."
With the loss, SBU drops to 1-1 on the year, both games coming against ranked opponents. Metro State stays unbeaten at 2-0.
The Bearcats are back in action on Thursday, September 9, with their MIAA opener at Emporia State. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. SBU's home opener against Missouri Western will take place the following Thursday, September 16, at 4 p.m.
