Box score vs ANGELO ST. | MISSOURI S&T | Season stats
LAKELAND, Fla. -- The volleyball Bearcats closed out the first tournament of the season by dropping a match to Angelo State, 3-0, before knocking off Missouri S&T, three games to two, at the Florida Southern Classic. Along with last night's win against Montevallo, the Bearcats already have one less five-set victory this season than in all of their 2009 campaign. Junior
Ashley Jurgensmeyer recorded 37 kills on the day, including a season-high 26 in the match against the Lady Miners, with a hitting percentage of .440.
The Rambelles of Angelo State were able to take substantial leads in each of the three games, leading the Bearcats by 6-2, 9-4, and 12-5 in each of the three games, respectively. In both of the first two games, the 'Cats were able to climb back and tie the game up at 10, but also in each game, Angelo State went on a run to close out the set.
Jurgensmeyer lead the Bearcats with 11 kills in the opening match, while senior setter
Brianna Wallace recorded 28 assists, and
Marcy Greenwade had a team-high 10 digs.
The 'Cats struggled getting out of the gate in the match against Missouri S&T as well, averaging about four points in the first ten plays of each game. In each game, SBU was able to climb back into the set, either taking the game or falling just short; the two games the Lady Miners won were by just two and three points, respectively.
SBU was on the ropes in the third and final game, down 11-9 in the first-to-15 set. The Bearcats, ran off six of the final seven points to close out the win, led by Jurgensmeyer four kills, and a game-clinching attack from senior
Joanna Granzow. Granzow finished the match with 14 kills and a .355 attack percentage. The team's .211 attack percentage is the highest of the early season to date.
The Bearcats record moves to 2-2 on the year after the season-opening tournament. SBU heads back out on the road again next week, traveling to Stephenville, Texas, for the TexAnn Invitational. The tournament kicks off on Friday, September 10, with the opening match against Midwestern State, scheduled for 12:30 p.m. The Bearcats will also face Cameron, Texas A&M-Commerce, and host Tarleton State over the two-day event.
