STILLWATER, Okla. -- At the prestigious 74th annual Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree, the SBU Bearcat cross country teams ran well in the University division against several Division I squads. The SBU women placed ninth out of 14th teams (230 points) while the Bearcat men were 15th out of 18 squads with 323 points.
Crissie Owensby was the top finisher for the SBU women, at 23:43.52 for 37th place.
Melanie McVay was close behind in 43rd place at 23:59.40 followed by
Ashley Wolkomir in 45th (24:04.95).
Karissa Fisher was 51st at 24:27.01 and
Rebecca Brigance came in 54th at 24:39.21.
The host Oklahoma State Cowgirls won the 6K event with 25 points, paced by Mihaela Susa with the top time at 21:10.53. Susa was one of five OSU runners in the top ten.
In the men's University division 8K race, SBU was led by
Phillip Miller in 33rd place at 26:07.09.
Josh Inman was next up in 65th place, at 27:14.81, then
Max McClure in 66th (27:15.17).
Ben Garrison finished 73rd at 27:24.50 while
Derek Lee was 86th at 27:42.41.
The OSU Cowboys also took the University race with 28 points, with five runners in the top ten. OSU's Girma Mecheso had the top time at 23:46.17.
In addition to the university races, OSU also hosted men's and women's college division races.
Florence Ngetich of El Paso Community College dominated the rest of the field in the women's 5,000-meter college race, finishing in first place with a time of 17:55.43. The team title, however, went to Midwestern State University, who narrowly edged Cowley College, 67-68.
The 8,000-meter men's college division race was not nearly as close, as Cowley College claimed the team title by more than 30 points over second-place Eastern New Mexico University. The individual title went to Colby Community College's Edward Limo, who crossed the line at 25:15.49.
The Bearcat squads will take a few weeks off before returning to action on October 16. The lone October meet for SBU cross country will be on that day at the Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark.
