BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The SBU Bearcats scored just over 10 minutes into the match, as freshman forward Ashley Creason punched in her fourth goal of the season. Through 83 minutes, it looked as if the SBU Bearcats were going to secure their first ever win over the Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha. After 84 minutes, however, UNO had scored on a blocked shot from about 20 yards out to tie the match.

Nebraska-Omaha's Becca Swanson took a shot at goal from outside the right corner of the box, that Bearcat defender Taylor Vick blocked cleanly. The ball ricocheted off Swanson's leg and floated past the reach of goalkeeper Megan Link, and into the left side of the net to draw even. The two sides played held one another scoreless through the two 10-minute overtime periods to each earn a point in the MIAA standings.

"When we played out game, we were dangerous," said SBU head coach Robert Podeyn after the match. "We played a very good team today, but no player on our side thought we shouldn't win."

Creason gave SBU the lead on a shot poked through to the top right of the goal, while forwards Brittany Ready and Marene Gomez each picked up an assist. While the Bearcats were outshot, 24-9, SBU had a number of runs at goal. The 'Cats got called for offsides seven times during the match, four more than the previous season high.

Omaha expectedly came into the first overtime period with the momentum after scoring the equalizer, and outshot SBU 6-1 in the extra frame. SBU was able to recover, however, and had three shots, plus a few more good looks in the second overtime.

Goalkeeper Megan Link improved her goals against average to 1.01, allowing just six scores in six matches to date. Over the 310 minutes in goal over the past three matches, Link has allowed just two goals. "In my opinion, Megan is one of the best goalkeepers in the country. I haven't seen a goalkeeper in our conference as good as her," said Podeyn about the sophomore. "From a .723 save percentage as a freshman, to .875 now is a huge jump. She had to learn to be a college-level keeper last year, and I think we're seeing some real improvements now."

With the draw, SBU moves to 2-3-2 overall, and 1-2-2 in conference play. Omaha stands at 2-4-1, and 2-2-1 in the MIAA. The Bearcats travel to Maryville to take on Northwest Missouri State this Saturday, September 25, then return home the following Saturday, October 2nd for a match against Washburn, scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m.
