BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The SBU Bearcats jumped out to an early 28-0 lead, and rolled to a big 59-14 win over the William Jewell Cardinals.
Justin Duhaney rushed for a career high 154 yards on 17 carries and scored twice, while
Steve Gachette threw for two touchdowns and rushed for two more in the victory, which evened SBU's record at 2-2.
"I'm very proud of our kids. They came out and set the tempo early - which is our normal style of football," said head coach Keith Allen. "All week we talked about moving the chains. We were successful today because we went with the underneath routes and didn't always try for the big play."
The Bearcats got things going on their first possession, when Gachette found
Charles Johnson from 38 yards out, which capped a nine-play, 75-yard drive. The touchdown pass from Gachette was his 75th in four years as a Bearcat.
Gachette scored from one yard out with seven minutes gone in the first, and later Duhaney rushed from three yards out to put SBU up 21-0 with 5:28 left in the opening frame. At the start of the second quarter, defensive back
Chris Muhammad returned a punt 61 yards for a touchdown and SBU led by 28 with barely over a quarter elapsed.
William Jewell (1-2) got on the board when Drew Witman hit Taylor Gallagher from nine yards out with eight minutes left in the second quarter. SBU responded quickly when Gachette and Johnson hooked up for their second touchdown connection, this time for 13 yards with five minutes left in the half. SBU took that 35-7 to the break.
In the third quarter, Duhaney and Gachette picked up their second rushing touchdowns on the day -- Duhaney's coming on a 65-yard sprint midway through the third and Gachette's from three yards out late in the period. Also in the third quarter, freshman kicker
Andrew Kocurek hit a 47-yard field goal. Kocurek was a perfect 8-for-8 on extra points on the day.
Jewell's Fealt Cooper scored on a four-yard run early in the fourth quarter, and SBU's
Tiras Harris scored on a one-yard dive with four minutes left in the game.
"Our group of running backs (Duhaney,
Chris Culbreth and Harris) ran hard and the offensive line was phenomenal," Allen added. "I'm also proud of our effort on third and fourth down. We still need to work on fumbles and our young defense allowed them to move the ball in the fourth quarter, but overall, I'm excited that we're starting to play the Bearcat style of football again."
SBU dominated the offensive numbers, outgaining WJC 585-288 in total offense while throwing for 303 yards to 99 for the Cardinals. SBU was 8 of 13 in third down conversions and perfect on all three fourth down attempts. The Bearcat defense recorded six sacks.
Gachette threw for 253 yards on 22 of 27 passing, had 36 yards rushing and accounted for four touchdowns. Culbreth, a freshman from Florida, rushed for 47 yards on eight carries while Harris ran for 49 yards and a touchdown.
D.A. Allen caught a team-high seven balls for 113 yards while
Sean Kelley and
Derrick Foster each had five catches.
Corey Drummond and
Austin Otwell had six tackles each, while
Chris Hawkins and
Gerard Anderson had five apiece.
Cooper rushed 17 times for 112 yards to lead the Cardinals while J.R. Bryant and David Diener recorded eight tackles each.
SBU is on the road for three straight weeks, beginning next Saturday, September 25, when they visit Southern Nazarene in Bethany, Oklahoma, for a 6 p.m. start. The next home game for the Bearcats won't be until October 23, when SBU hosts Central State (Ohio) for homecoming.
