STEPHENVILLE, Texas -- The SBU volleyball Bearcats kicked off day one of the Tarleton State TexAnn Invitational with a win against Midwestern State, 3-2. Then the Bearcats followed that with a 3-0 evening shutout of Cameron, to improve to 4-2 on the young season.
SBU quickly took the first set over Midwestern, 25-9, but went on to drop the second and third sets, by scores of 19-25 and 23-25. After facing two match points in the fourth set, Junior Kylie Heim saved the match with kills to tie the set at both 24-24 and 25-25. After an ace from Alyx Glover, Ashley Jurgensmeyer got the winning kill. Heim and Jurgensmeyer teamed up in the fifth set to get the last two points for a 16-14 win.
Against MSU, the Bearcat attack put up its best performance of the early season, with a .261 attack percentage. A new season high nine aces helped give the 'Cats an advantage as well, with Brianna Wallace, Alyx Glover, and Iceley Perry recording three each. Junior Ashley Jurgensmeyer led the 'Cats with 18 kills and six blocks. Joanna Granzow had a team high .478 hitting percentage. Wallace recorded 58 assists, a new season high. Four Bearcats came away with double-digits in digs (Wallace, Glover, Marcy Greenwade, and Britni Reed), with Greenwade leading the way with 20.
In the evening contest against Cameron, the 'Cats controlled the action, winning in straight sets, 25-19, 25-16, and 25-22. Reed led the Bearcats with eight kills and .333 hitting percentage. Jurgensmeyer, Granzow and Jenna Isaacs each had seven kills. Wallace had 24 assists, while Iceley Perry and Reed had 10 and 9 digs respectively.
After opening somewhat rough in the first set against Cameron (.067 attack percentage), SBU turned things around, hitting .258 in the second set before finishing strong with a .351 percentage.
SBU continues action on Saturday when they play Texas A&M-Commerce at noon and end the tournament play against the host Tarleton State at 4 p.m.
