BOLIVAR, Mo. -- With an early lead, the SBU Bearcats were unable to hold off a comeback from the Missouri Western Griffons in the opening game of a doubleheader, and two late runs in both the sixth and seventh innings resulted in a 4-2 loss for the Bearcats; The 'Cats late run in the second game wasn't quite enough either, as they fell in the second matchup, 7-2. Third baseman Krysta Baderdeen went 4-for-7 with a run and an RBI in the two games combined.
The Bearcats struck first in game one, when second baseman Stacie Davis led off with a single, then late came around to score on Baderdeen's single. BreAnn Proctor would make the score 2-0 when the Missouri Western catcher threw the ball away as Baderdeen stole second. The Griffons would take advantage of mistakes in the field by the Bearcats, and after a lead-off home run in the sixth cut the SBU lead to 2-1, Western brought home the tying run who reached base on an error earlier in the inning. Western scored two more in the top of the seventh, one of which was unearned, to take the 4-2 win. Pitcher Josie Rose threw a solid game, allowing only three hits through the first five innings, and not allowing a single Griffon to reach third base. Even when Missouri Western got on the board and took the lead, only four of the fourteen plate appearances resulted in hits.
Western got on the board early in game two, and a three-run lead in the fourth gave them a 5-0 advantage. SBU was able to get on the board in the fifth, when Davis reached on an error, then scored on a double from Nina-Amaro Garcia. The 'Cats cut the lead to 5-2 in the sixth, when Karly Bitters' sac fly with the bases loaded allowed Baderdeen to tag up from third for the score.
With the pair of losses, SBU falls to 12-22 overall, and 1-7 in conference play. The Bearcats resume again Saturday, April 10 as they host Truman State for a doubleheader starting at noon.
