SBU baseball falls in series opener at Northwest Missouri

MARYVILLE, Mo. --
The baseball Battle of the Bearcats went to the home team Friday, with Northwest Missouri taking both games of the twinbill over SBU, winning 5-3 and 9-5 in the nightcap.

Northwest led 2-0 in the fourth inning when SBU got on the scoreboard on Paden Grubbs' two-run homer. The purple Bearcats got another run in the fifth when Nigel Morton tripled to score Kyle Tormanen. Morton had two hits in the opener while Josh Brock threw two innings of scoreless relief. NWMSU's Joe Kankovsky had three hits including a home run and drove in three.

SBU (7-29, 5-23 MIAA) broke on top in game two with three runs in the fourth inning. Grubbs doubled home Niko Saladis who had reached on an error. After Grubbs was sacrificed to third, Kyle Wise homered to left. NWMSU (10-25, 8-14 MIAA) responded with two runs in the fifth and six more in the sixth. SBU got two more runs in the seventh, when Justin Crumpley doubled to score Taylor Trotter and Tormanen doubled to score Crumpley.

Wise's homer was one of just six SBU hits. Kreed Kurtz of NMWSU led the green 'Cats in the second game with three hits and three RBI.

The two squads will conclude their four-game series on Saturday with the doubleheader starting at noon.
