BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The SBU softball Bearcats were finally able to have their Senior Day, after two previous rainouts over the weekend, and gained a split Monday against the Washburn Lady Blues. SBU won the first game, 3-1, behind a complete game pitching performance from Josie Rose. Washburn pounded four home runs in their game two 12-5 win.
The Bearcats (20-27, 3-9 MIAA) managed only three hits in the opener, all coming in the second inning when they scored twice. Seniors Nina Amaro-Garcia and Katrina Munoz singled to start the inning, and Munoz would later score on a sacrifice fly by Karly Bitters. Devon McNeal scored the other run on a single by Stacie Davis. Chelsi Fischer would come around to score in the fifth inning after being hit by pitch to lead off the inning.
Tish Williams provided Washburn's (23-18, 7-6 MIAA) only run with a third inning home run. SBU's Rose threw seven innings and scattered seven hits while striking out nine. WU's Kayla Long also went the distance, striking out five.
In game two, Washburn went on top in a scoreless game with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth. SBU got on the board in the fifth when Krysta Baderdeen hit her ninth homer of the season, a three-run blast that tied her with Amaro-Garcia for the team lead and SBU single season record. Washburn broke the game open with wild sixth frame, that saw them score seven times and send 11 players to the plate. SBU scored twice in the bottom of the inning,but it was nearly enough.
Baderdeen had two hits and drove in four. Munoz went 3-for-3 with two stolen bases. Ashley Podschun had three hits and drove in two for the Lady Blues.
Between games, the Bearcats honored five seniors: Katrina Munoz, Nina Amaro-Garcia, McKenzie Mortimer, Jamie Garber and Ashton Horn.
The Bearcats are right back in action on Tuesday, when they visit Warrensburg to take on Central Missouri. The 3 p.m. doubleheader is a makeup contest from the March 24 originally scheduled date.
