BOLIVAR, Mo. -- Following a 3-2 mark in the MIAA Crossover Tournament, SBU maintained their momentum against Missouri S&T to earn a split with the Lady Miners. The Bearcats took the opener, in a thrilling 2-1 extra-inning victory. Senior first baseman Nina Amaro-Garcia went 4-for-6 with a double and RBI in game one. Third baseman Krysta Baderdeen hit a solo home run in game two, her eighth of the season and 19th of her career, the most by a Bearcat all-time.
Missouri S&T made sure early that SBU pitcher Josie Rose wouldn't throw another no-hitter against them like she did last year, as Lady Miner right fielder Lauren Briggs led off the top of the first with a double. Rose recovered, as she retired the next three hitters. Rose would go on to pitch all eight innings, allowing just one run in the fifth inning, while striking out four.
After the Miners tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth, both offenses were shut down until extras. Starting in the eighth inning, according to NCAA rules, the last batter from the previous inning is placed on second base, giving offenses an easier chance to push across the winning run. Missouri S&T seemed to have taken advantage, as a leadoff single gave the Lady Miners runners on second and third with no outs. After a quick groundout that held the runners, Rose got out of the jam with help from her third baseman. After the S&T batter popped up in foul territory to Baderdeen, the runner on third decided to test her arm and was thrown out at home for the final out of the inning.
After saving the run, Baderdeen was the leadoff hitter for the Bearcats in the bottom of the eighth, where she finished the job with a leadoff single, bringing BreAnn Proctor around for the game-winning run.
Missouri S&T was able to earn the split as their offense warmed up in game two. After a quick three runs in the second inning with two more added on in the fourth, Baderdeen closed the gap with a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the fourth. S&T were able to get the run back in the fifth, and even with another run in the bottom of the seventh, the Bearcats fell, 6-2.
With the split, SBU moves to 19-26 on the year, with ten conference games remaining over the last two weeks of the season. The Bearcats host Washburn this Friday, April 23rd for a doubleheader. SBU's five seniors will be recognized as part of the senior day festivities, starting at 2 p.m.
