BOYS TOWN, Neb. -- The SBU baseball Bearcats saw two sides of the #26 Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks Friday. In game one, UNO's Joe Holtmeyer, the reigning MIAA Pitcher of the Week, showed why he picked up the award with a 5-0 shutout while striking out 15 batters and allowing one hit. In the second contest, SBU led 8-7 heading to the bottom of the sixth, before the Mavs exploded with 13 runs to win 20-8.
Officially, Friday's game one began Thursday afternoon after the first game of the series was completed, when UNO's Brandon Dahl threw one pitch to Justin Barnhart. The teams were prepared in case of a rainout Friday, which would have left them playing three seven inning games Saturday. But the rains moved on and UNO's Holtmeyer moved in. SBU's Niko Saladis notched the only Bearcat hit with a first inning single.
In game two, UNO (19-8, 15-4 MIAA) broke on top with four runs in the second inning. SBU answered with two in the third when Saladis singled to score Justin Crumpley. Barnhart later scored on a wild pitch. The Mavs got three more in the bottom of the third to lead 7-2.
The Bearcats (6-26, 5-20 MIAA) responded with three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Barnhart drew a walk to plate Taylor Trotter. Saladis also picked up an RBI via walk to score Crumpley. Nigel Morton scored the third run on a balk. The 'Cats' fifth inning scoring started when pinch runner Ryan Huslig stole second and scored on a throwing error by the UNO catcher. Crumpley doubled, scoring Trotter, and later Crumpley scored on a double by Morton.
Walks were the Bearcats' downfall in the UNO's big sixth inning, as the Mavs scored 13 runs on 7 hits and 6 free passes. Tyler Lundy had four RBI in the inning, including a double and home run.
Crumpley scored three times in game two, while Morton had two hits and Saladis had two RBI. Tyler Splichal had three hits for the Mavs.
The series wraps up Saturday with a nine-inning game beginning at noon from the Ballpark at Boys Town.
