MARYVILLE, Mo. -- It was a tale of two shutouts for the SBU Bearcats on day two at the MIAA Northern Crossover. Nebraska-Omaha blanked the Bearcats 13-0 in morning contest before SBU returned the shutout against Washburn, winning 1-0 in a pitcher's duel.
In the opener with the Mavericks (31-9), UNO scored five times in the first inning, added two more in the third and finished the game with six in the fifth. UNO's Beth Haley allowed just two SBU hits and struck out seven.
With SBU's Josie Rose and WU's Kourtnea Morgan locked in a pitching duel, Krysta Baderdeen provided the game's only run with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. Baderdeen continues to add to her school record, with 18 homers in her three seasons. Rose (11-15) struck out six in seven innings while allowing just three hits and picked up her fifth shutout of the year. Morgan struck out five and allowed four hits.
SBU is now 18-25 on the year while Washburn drops to 22-16. The two teams will play a doubleheader in Bolivar this Friday at 2 p.m. That date will also be Senior Day for the Bearcats. Prior to that, SBU will host Missouri S&T for a twinbill this Tuesday, beginning at 2 p.m.
