BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The SBU baseball Bearcats split Saturday with Truman State and won the weekend series by taking three of four from the Bulldogs. The Bearcats rallied to win Saturday's opener 5-4, before the Bulldogs broke a 4-4 tie with three runs in the ninth in game two.
In the opener, SBU (11-33, 9-25 MIAA) broke on top with three in the first inning. Paden Grubbs singled to score Justin Barnhart and later Justin Crumpley doubled to bring home Grubbs and Niko Saladis. After Truman got two in the second, SBU scored when Saladis singled to plate Nigel Morton.
The Bulldogs added single runs in the third and fifth innings to tie the game at four. SBU took the lead when Saladis scored on Kyle Wise's fielder's choice in the fifth inning. Saladis was 2-for-2 with two runs scored in the opener while Josh Brock picked up his third save of the year. Pete Jurich homered and had three hits for TSU (11-32, 6-26 MIAA).
In game two, Truman took the early lead with four runs in the second inning. SBU answered in the bottom of the second when Dominic Bouvier drove in two with his first homer of the year. Morton's sac fly in the fourth cut the TSU lead to 4-3 and Wise's sac fly in the eighth tied the game. Brett Budd of Truman doubled in the ninth with the bases loaded to give the Bulldogs the victory.
Crumpley and Morton had two hits each for the 'Cats. Lefthander Wes Burrell had a solid start for the Bearcats with four runs allowed through 7 1/3 innings. Jordan McLaughlin picked up the win for Truman, going eight innings with four runs allowed.
SBU visits #2 Central Missouri on Tuesday, April 20. The doubleheader begins at 4 p.m. from Warrensburg. The Bearcats and Mules split their games in Bolivar on March 30, with SBU rallying from a 8-1 deficit for a 12-11 win.
