MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Friday was a good and bad day for the SBU softball team, as they won their first two games at the MIAA Northern Crossover at Northwest Missouri State. SBU topped Fort Hays State 6-1 in the opener and beat Missouri Western 3-1 in game two. Unfortunately playing their third game of the day caught up to SBU, when Truman's Richelle vanGennip no-hit the Bearcats 5-0.
Sarah Brison led the way for the Bearcats (17-24) against Fort Hays, driving in four on her fifth and sixth home runs of the year. Nina Amaro-Garcia hit her eighth homer and drove in two, as SBU got two runs in each of the first, third and sixth innings.
Josie Rose out-dueled FHSU's Maddie Holub to pick up the win. Each pitcher went the full seven innings but Rose allowed just one run and three hits while striking out seven with no walks. Holub struck out eleven but walked three and gave up six earned runs.
Amaro-Garcia kept it going in game two against Missouri Western, hitting her ninth homer of the season to set a new SBU single season record. Amaro-Garcia trails teammate Krysta Baderdeen 17-16 for the SBU career home run mark.
In the fourth inning against MWSU, Katrina Munoz singled to score pinch runner Jamie Garber. Later Munoz and Amaro-Garcia pulled off a double steal as Munoz swiped second and Amaro-Garcia stealing home. SBU added their third run in the sixth on Amaro-Garcia's record-breaking blast.
In the night game with Truman, van Gennip struck out eight in her no-hitter against the injury-depleted Bearcats. SBU has continued to battle over the last several weeks despite the loss of four starting position players. Erica LaCombe drove in two for the Bulldogs (16-22).
SBU continues action in the MIAA Crossover on Saturday. The Bearcats will take on Nebraska-Omaha at 10 a.m. and Washburn at 2 p.m. The Crossover games do not count in the MIAA standings.
