Softball Bearcats fall in extra innings before hammering East Central

Krysta Baderdeen's record-tying day at the plate helped the SBU softball Bearcats to a split with the East Central Lady Tigers. Baderdeen homered twice and drove in six runs as SBU routed ECU, 14-4, in the final game of a four-game series. The Bearcats dropped a heartbreaker in the day's first game, falling 7-6 in eight innings.

Krysta Baderdeen tied SBU records with six RBI and three runs scored as the Bearcats belted ECU in the final game of the weekend. After the Bearcats scored once in the first inning, McKenzie Mortimer drove in two runs in the third inning with a single, helping SBU to four-run third inning. East Central scored once in each of the third and fourth innings. SBU got a single run in the fourth inning on a solo shot from Krysta Baderdeen.

The Bearcats eight-run explosion came in the fifth inning. Stephanie Luciani's single scored Mortimer. Luciani would score on a double from Sechler. Stacie Davis' single scored Sechler. A grand slam from Krysta Baderdeen was the inning's big blow, scoring Sarah Brison, Davis and Chelsi Fischer.

Josie Rose evened her record at 4-4 going five innings in the second game, while striking out four. Brison, Latasha and Krysta Baderdeen, Mortimer and Luciani each had two hits as SBU recorded 15 total base knocks in the rout. Mortimer and Luciani also drove in two runs each. Kasey Barber had two hits and an RBI for East Central.

East Central (12-4) jumped out to 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings of the opener. The Bearcats tied the game with four in the top of the sixth. Katrina Munoz and Davis had RBI doubles in the four-run inning.

With the score tied at four after seven innings, the extra eighth inning began for the Bearcats with Munoz placed on second base under collegiate softball rules. Munoz would score on a double from Brison. Brison would later score on a hit by Davis, when Nina Amaro-Garcia got caught in a rundown. East Central got two in the bottom of the eighth on a double from Hillary Hughes and won the game on an RBI single to center by pinch hitter Stefanie Watson.

Munoz and Davis had two hits in the opener while Munoz also scored twice to lead the 'Cats in game one. Desiree' Nordie went 2-for-4 with three RBI for the Lady Tigers.

SBU (6-8) hosts a pair of doubleheaders this week. Wednesday's twinbill with Arkansas Tech begins at 2 p.m. while Thursday's games with Missouri-St. Louis start at 1 p.m.
