PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The SBU Bearcats and Pittsburg State Gorillas were finally able to play the first twinbill of their four-game series. Sunday's results went the way of the home team, with Pitt State edging the Bearcats 4-1 in the opener. The second game was also won by the Gorillas, 11-6.
The opener saw a pitching duel between SBU's Jared Berman and PSU's Ryan Sorell. One inning was the difference in the game -- the Gorillas scored three runs on three hits but were aided by a throwing error and wild pitch in the second inning. A sacrifice fly from Nigel Morton brought home Justin Crumpley in the SBU third for the Bearcats' only run. A solo home run by PSU's Rhett Rigby in the fourth inning was the game's other run.
SBU (2-15, 1-9 MIAA) managed six hits on the game, spread between six players. Crumpley had one of the hits and scored the only run. Berman threw six innings, allowing five hits while striking out four and walking two. Rigby went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Gorillas.
The second game featured more offense from both clubs. Paden Grubbs hit his third homer of the season to lead off the second inning. PSU grabbed a pair of runs in each of the second, third and fifth innings. In the SBU seventh, Crumpley singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a double from Niko Saladis. A single from Nigel Morton scored Saladis. After a pitching change, Justin Barnhart doubled to right, sending Morton to third. A sac fly from Grubbs brought home Morton.
Pitt State (7-6, 6-6 MIAA) answered back with four in the bottom of the seventh. SBU scored twice in the eighth, first on a single from Crumpley that scored Steven Davis and later on a fielder's choice from Taylor Trotter that brought home Lendon Ehlman. PSU added a run in the bottom half of the eighth.
Morton and Ehlman each had three hits for the Bearcats, while Crumpley added two hits. Grubbs drove home two runners. Rigby was again the top performer for PSU, going 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBI.
The teams will continue the series tomorrow, with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. from Al Ortolani Field in Pittsburg.
