BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The SBU softball Bearcats were in position for a sweep of the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns. After taking the first game 6-2 and fighting an oncoming rainstorm, the Bearcats led 2-1 heading to the seventh inning. Unfortunately, things unraveled in the last frame, as ATU scored four times to win the nightcap 5-2.
The Bearcats (7-9) took the lead in the opener with a three-run third inning, highlighted by RBI extra base hits from Krysta Baderdeen and McKenzie Mortimer. Mortimer's two RBI came on a triple. SBU got single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, the final run coming on a solo blast by Sarah Brison.
Reigning MIAA Hitter of the Week Krysta continued her hot streak in the win, going 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored. Younger sister Latasha Baderdeen also had two hits while Nina Amaro-Garcia scored twice and McKenzie Mortimer drove in two. ATU's Amy Kilpatrick had two of the four Golden Suns hits and also scored both runs.
In the second game, Arkansas Tech (10-8) got a run in the third and led 1-0 into the bottom of the fifth inning. Latasha Baderdeen brought home a run with a single and later scored on a double by Katrina Munoz. In the top of the seventh, with SBU up one run, ATU scored four runs with two outs. The first run came on a lined shot to center, when Mortimer's diving attempt came up short. Later ATU's Tiphani Moon had the big blow with a three-run homer.
Stephanie Luciani had two hits in game two for the Bearcats. Josie Rose took the tough loss, after getting to within one out of the win before the ATU rally. Rose struck out five. Moon and Jimeson had two hits each for ATU while Jimeson also drove in two.
SBU is right back in action on Thursday, with a 1 p.m doubleheader in Bolivar with Missouri-St. Louis.
