WEATHERFORD, Okla. -- Behind complete games from Josie Rose and Karly Bitters, the SBU softball Bearcats picked up their first two wins of season Friday, beating Southwestern Oklahoma 4-3 and Oklahoma Christian 4-2. Rose struck out six while allowing six hits through seven innings. Bitters scattered nine hits through seven innings, and didn't walk a batter in her start.
In the second inning of game one versus SWOSU, McKenzie Mortimer reached on an error and stole second before scoring on an RBI double from Stephanie Luciani. In the fourth, Katrina Munoz singled and stole second and scored on a single from Luciani. The Bearcats got two more in the fifth inning, when Krysta Baderdeen stole home. A single from Munoz later brought home Sarah Brison.
Luciani was 2-for-3 in the game with two RBI. Munoz also had two hits to go along with her RBI and run scored. The Bearcats swiped four bases in the game as SBU handed the Bulldogs their first loss of the season (7-1).
The second contest against the OCU Eagles (0-2) saw the Bearcats get three runs in the bottom of the second inning, again getting it done on the basepaths. Luciani singled and stole second before scoring on double from Stephanie Sechler. Later, Latasha Baderdeen's sac fly brought home Sechler. BreAnn Proctor walked and swiped second before scoring on an error by the OCU shortstop.
Luciani was also 2-for-3 in the second contest, while taking one of three SBU stolen bases.
UPDATE: 2/20/10 10:30 AM -- SBU's scheduled softball games Saturday against Southwestern Oklahoma and Oklahoma Christian were cancelled due to rain. The games will not be rescheduled. The Bearcats (2-4) will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Tuesday, February 23, in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m, weather permitting.
