THE COACHES AND ALL-TIME SERIES
SBU head coach Jeff Guiot continues in his seventh season on the Bearcat bench, where he has won three MIAA regular season titles, and compiled a 127-57 (.690) record. Coach Guiot has led the 'Cats to an MIAA Tournament appearance each season, and three NCAA Tournament appearnaces. Last season, SBU won 20 games for the third consecutive season, marking the first time in the history of the program the feat has been accomplished.
Steve Hesser begins his seventh season as the head coach of the Drury men's basketball program, where he has posted a 124-52 record, and five 20-win seasons.
Drury boasts a 28-21 record all-time against the Bearcats, but the series has been back and forth in recent years, with each team going 5-5 since 2000.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BEARCATS
SBU fell to 0-3 for the first time since the 2002-03 season, after a 68-74 loss on the road to Missouri S&T. The Bearcats had a 13-point lead in the first half, but allowed 32 points in the paint as the Miners mounted the comeback. Senior
Kurt Koenig led the 'Cats with 17 points, including three treys. Koenig collected a team-high nine rebounds as well.
Ryan Dougherty (14) and
Robson Memnon (13) each reached double-figures, as Dougherty went 4-for-8 from beyond the arc, and Memnon collected nine boards.
Sophomore
Jacob French had another strong performance, racking up seven points and eight rebounds, while point guard
Tomas Brock dealt out six assists.
Freshman and Bolivar native
Dalton Kelley saw time on the floor, and made good use of it. Kelley scored four points in just six minutes, and was responsible for a steal on the defensive end. Both of Kelley's baskets came as the result of his taking advantage of the offensive rebound and scoring the put-back.
QUICK HITS
• Senior
Kurt Koenig currently leads the team with 15.0 points per game, to go along with his team-high 7.7 rebounds a game. Koenig is shooting an even 40% from the floor, including 37.5% from three, and is the last Bearcat to remain perfect from the free throw line.
• SBU has won 42 of the last 45 games at the Meyer Sports Center, including a streak of 38 straight wins that stretches from 2007-10. Coach Guiot's teams are 69-13 in Bolivar.
• Last season, point guard
Tomas Brock earned All-MIAA Honorable Mention honors, averaging 13.2 points per game and 4.7 assists per game.
