PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Senior
Brianna Wallace collected 53 assists in her final match, breaking the SBU all-time assist record, with 3,948 during her four-year career. The Bearcats were unable to secure the win, however, falling to the Gorillas, 3-2.
After taking ten of the last eleven points for the opening set win, the Bearcats looked poised to go up two games to none with a 23-19 lead in the second set. The Gorillas rallied with six straight kills to come back and take the set, 25-23.
The Bearcats answered swiftly in the third, hitting for a .250 average, collecting 11 kills and taking advantage of eight Pittsburg errors. SBU put the set away with a five-point rally that built the Bearcat lead from 15-11 to 20-11. Kylie Heim finished the Gorillas off with a kill for the Bearcats' 25th point.
The closest set came in the fourth, when Pittsburg State held a narrow lead throughout, but couldn't pull away from the Bearcats. The biggest advantage the Gorillas had came at 15-11, after which SBU went 8-4 over the next 12 points to earn a 19-19 tie. Pittsburg took a small lead again, but SBU came back at 24-24, before a pair of kills for the Gorillas clinched the fourth set, 26-24.
The Bearcats looked ready to take their second five-set win in as many nights, with a 6-3 lead over Pittsburg early in the final game. After a Gorilla kill earned the side out, Pittsburg State ran off a 9-point rally that nearly put the game away, 13-6. The Bearcats picked up a few more points, but couldn't hold serve, as the Gorillas took the 15-8 win.
Junior hitter
Ashley Jurgensmeyer led the Bearcats with 16 kills, closely followed by
Kylie Heim, with 13. Senior
Marcy Greenwade, in her final match as a Bearcat, racked up 31 digs, the third-highest total in her career.
Britni Reed(17),
Iceley Perry (12), along with
Alyx Glover and Wallace (11) finished with double-digit digs. To go with the school record, Wallace also recorded her team-leading 13th double-double of the season.
With the loss, SBU comes in at 11-21, and 6-14 in the MIAA. The Bearcats' six conference wins marks a school record, as the 11 victories mark the third straight season SBU has had ten or more wins for the first time since 1987-89.
