SBU football ends regular season with loss to Arkansas Tech

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. --
Junior wide reciever Charles Johnson broke the SBU all-time record for touchdown catches, with his 22nd against Arkansas Tech, but the Bearcats fell in the season finale to the Wonder Boys, 42-14. Quarterback Steven Gachette had 152 yards passing before being taken out in the second quarter due to injury. 

Arkansas Tech got out to a big lead early, taking a 21-0 lead in the second quarter. The Bearcat offense struggled in the early portions of the game, managing just two first downs in their first five possessions. SBU got rolling in the second quarter, with a 99-yard drive that ended with Johnson's 37-yard touchdown. Arkansas Tech answered with back-to-back field goals, giving them a 27-7 lead at halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Wonder Boys had a lengthy 12-play, six minute drive, highlighted by Tech quarterback Rico Keller's 1-yard touchdown pass to Derandus Frye. SBU cut the lead to 20 after Justin French's 26-yard pass to Johnson that set up Thad Everson's touchdown, punched in from the 1-yard line.

Both sides were plagued with penalties, with each team racking up over 100 yards in penalties. The Arkansas Tech defense had a solid game, holding the 'Cats to just 205 yards of total offense.

With the loss, SBU falls to 7-4 on the year, tying the school record for wins in a season. Gachette ends the year with over 3,000 passing yards for the third straight season, and is the only quarterback in SBU history to ever reach the 3,000 yard mark. Johnson becomes the third Bearcat to reach 1,000 receiving yards, with 1,222 on the season.
