Ryan Dougherty had a game-high 17 points off 6-for-13 shooting, but the Bearcats shot just 28.4% for the game, as they fell to the Bronchos, 85-56. Senior forward
Kurt Koenig had nine rebounds, and along with point guard
Tomas Brock, had a team-best 4 assists.
Central Oklahoma took control in part to their control of the post, out-scoring the Bearcats in points in the paint, 30-12. The Broncho bench also stepped up, scoring 38 points, led by Shane Carrol with 12.
SBU would hold their only lead of the game early on, when Dougherty hit the first of his four three pointers, giving the 'Cats a 5-2 lead just three minutes in. The Bearcats hung with Central Oklahoma, never falling behind by more than nine points until the closing minutes of the first half, when the Bronchos went on a 10-0 run. SBU went into the locker rooms down 35-21 at the half.
The 'Cats came out strong in their first two possesions of the second half, with
Robson Memnon and
Joseph Prophet each hitting shots, but a trio of missed three-pointers each followed by a basket on the other end for Central Oklahoma, blew up the deficit to 22 points.
Freshman
Lane Barlow had a strong debut for the Bearcats; the Chicago native went 3-for-3 from the field for eight points, and had a team-high three steals.
With the loss, SBU moves to 0-1 on the year. The Bearcats are back in action tomorrow night, November 13, as they wrap up the High Desert Classic and face off against St. Mary's (Texas) at 7:30 p.m. Central.
