BOLIVAR, Mo. -- Brittani Ready scored her second goal of the season late against the Emporia State Hornets, but SBU's lone goal would not be enough, as the Hornets defeat SBU, 2-1. The Bearcats and Hornets played to a scoreless tie through the first half, but Emporia broke through in the 61st minute with the go-ahead goal, then put the game away with another in the 86th.
SBU controlled the tempo throughout the game, outshooting the Hornets in both halves and by a 21-16 margin. From the 10th through the 17th minute, SBU's attack was knocking on the door, but couldn't get one of their five shots in the back of the net. SBU made another push in the final minutes of the opening half, as midfielder
Lindsey Boden took a pair of shots that were blocked, then
Rachel Haden's shot went wide of the goal.
Emporia State spent most of the first half back on defense, but would get the occasional run on goal. The same setup is how ESU's Amanda Penney got loose and put home the first goal of the match. SBU's
Kelly Isaac nearly had the equalizer in the 68th minute, when her shot fired off the crossbar.
Jen French collected the rebound, but her shot was pushed away by the Hornet keeper.
The Hornets put away what would prove to be the winning goal in the 86th minute, when another run resulted in a Emporia shot coming off the crossbar, and Penney putting away the rebound for her second goal of the game. Two minutes later, SBU got back in the match with a score off another rebound, from Ready. Emporia was able to kill the clock from that point on, as SBU wouldn't get another shot off in time. "It was a rough loss to take," said head coach
Rob Podeyn after the match. "We have to take it as an opportunity to learn and grow as a team."
WIth the loss, SBU falls to 5-4-2 on the year, and 4-3-2 in conference play. Emporia earned their first win of the season, and first over the Bearcats since 2005.
SBU is back in action this Thursday, October 14, for a mid-week battle with conference leaders Central Missouri. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
