HAYS, Kan. -- The volleyball Bearcats got back on the winning track, knocking off Fort Hays State, 3-1.
Ashley Jurgensmeyer led the 'Cats for the fifth straight game with 21 kills, while senior
Brianna Wallacecollected 50 assists.
SBU controlled the opening game, holding a small lead throughout the way. With an 11-8 lead, the Bearcats started to pull away with a three point run off three consecutive Fort Hays errors. At 21-15, the Tigers made a run to close out the set, taking seven of the next ten points, but Jurgensmeyer closed out the set with her sixth kill of the game.
The Bearcats carried the momentum into the second game, winning the first six points. SBU built up a 10-4 lead with back-to-back kills from
Kelsey Beyer and
Jordan Nedbalek. Fort Hays would close the gap to two, after winning five of the following six points. Three straight kills from three different Bearcats (
Jenna Isaacs,
Britni Reed, and Wallace) would give SBU a 14-9 lead and force the Tigers to burn a timeout. Neither team could hold a serve shortly after, and the 'Cats held on for a 25-20 win in game two.
Fort Hays answered back in the third set, taking eight of the first ten points. SBU battled back to make it a 21-19 Tiger advantage, but was unable to hold serve, and Fort Hays closed out the set with a pair of kills to win 25-21.
With
Marcy Greenwade and
Alyx Glover starting the fourth set on long service runs, the Bearcats shut the door early on a Fort Hays comeback by jumping out to a 12-1 lead. The Tigers went on a 7-4 run that cut the lead to 18-9, but SBU comfortably put the game away.
Jurgensmeyer's 21 kills is the highest for a four-set game this year, and Wallace reached 50 assists for just the third time this year, and the first time since early September.
Kylie Heim had a career-high 15 kills, hitting for a .344 percentage. Greenwade (17) and
Iceley Perry (11) both reached double-digits in digs.
With the win, SBU moves to 7-12, and 2-5 in conference play. The 'Cats have one more game their current seven-game road trip, this Tuesday, October 12, against Emporia State. SBU returns home on Friday, October 15th, against Missouri Southern, starting at 7 p.m.
