URBANA, Ohio -- SBU quarterback
Steven Gachette threw for over 400 yards and four touchdowns, while
Thad Everson had his first 100-yard performance on the ground this year, as the Bearcats knock off the Blue Knights, 50-21.
The Bearcats had two receivers reach the century mark, as
Charles Johnson and
D.A. Allen both caught nine passes, Johnson for 180 yards and a pair of scores, while Allen racked up 121 yards and one touchdown.
Andre Hicks led the SBU defense with 12 tackles, and
Shaquille Shedd had a pair of sacks.
SBU started slow out of the gate, and after an opening three-and-out, Gachette threw an interception to Urbana's Brandon Jackson. The Blue Knights started the following drive on the SBU 23 yard line, and took the lead on a pass from D.J. Mendenhall from about nine yards out to Matt Hightower. After another three-and-out for the Bearcat offense, Urbana looked poised to increase their lead when
Anthony Wiggins picked off Mendenhall in Blue Knight territory, returning the ball to the 20 yard line. Three plays later, and thanks to an Urbana personal foul penalty, the Bearcats tied the game late in the first quarter with the first of two
Justin Duhaney touchdown runs.
The Bearcats quickly took a 20-7 lead, as Everson ended a 11-play, 91 yard drive with a score, and Gachette connected with Johnson for their first time of the game. After suffering a blocked extra point, freshman kicker
Andrew Kocurek nailed a 43-yard field goal to put the 'Cats up 23-7.
Urbana was able to cut the Bearcat lead down to nine late in the second quarter with a 44-yard touchdown pass to make it 23-14. Gachette connected with
Sean Kelley with just thirty seconds left in the half for a 47-yard touchdown, and took a 29-14 lead into the half.
After Andre Hicks and
Will Ramirez, Jr. each brought down the Urbana quarterback to force a punt on the first drive of the second half, Gachette found Johnson for an 85 yard touchdown pass on SBU's first offensive snap coming out of halftime. SBU built up a 36-14 lead, and was comfortably ahead for the rest of the game.
Urbana linebacker Travis Brisco took advantage of an SBU fumble midway through the third quarter, returning the ball 35 yards for a Blue Knight touchdown. After trading punts, Justin Duhaney scored his second touchdown with a five yard run, capping a 12 play drive that gave the 'Cats a 43-21 lead. Midway through the fourth quarter, Gachette completed a 29-yard touchdown pass to Allen to reach the 50-point mark for the third time in as many games.
Defensively, the Bearcats recorded six sacks from five different players, the most in a game since two weeks ago against William Jewell. The 'Cats forced four turnovers, recovering three fumbles along with Wiggins' interception. The turnover battle turned out even, however, as SBU lost a pair of fumbles and Gachette had a pair of interceptions.
With the win, SBU moves to 4-2 on the year. The 'Cats three-week road trip will wrap up next Saturday, October 9, as they face the Lincoln Blue Tigers. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
