BOX SCORES: ACU | DBU

TOPEKA, Kan. -
The SBU Bearcats took home two tough losses in the first day of the Washburn Lady Blues Classic, falling to Abilene Christian, 3-0, before a comeback fell short against Dallas Baptist, in a 3-2 loss. Ashley Jurgensmeyer and Joanna Granzow each had 19 kills in the two matches combined, with Jurgensmeyer racking up 15 against Dallas Baptist.

Against the Patriots, SBU dropped the opening two games by scores of 23-25 and 19-25. The Bearcats were able to bounce back in the third, however, jumping out to a quick 9-4 lead, and building on that to take a dominant 15-8 advantage. From that point, Dallas Baptist climbed back to force a tie at 19-19, but four straight points with Britni Reed throwing down a pair of service aces gave SBU a 23-19 lead, and eventually a 25-20 win.

After giving up the first three points in game four, SBU took 11 of the next 14 points to gain control, 11-6. Dallas Baptist again was able to battle back, tying the game late, at 22-22. Following a DBU error, Jurgensmeyer was able to close out the game with a pair of kills, and the 'Cats took game four, 25-23.

The fifth game went back and forth, with neither team gaining more than a two-point lead until late in the game. After a Granzow kill and an error from DBU, the Bearcats held a 11-10 lead in the 15-point game. The Patriots ran off five straight to close out the match, however, taking the fifth game, 15-11.

Senior setter Brianna Wallace finished the day with 66 total assists (22 against Abilene Christian, and 44 against Dallas Baptist). Marcy Greenwade led the 'Cats with 14 digs against the Wildcats, and 16 against Dallas Baptist.

SBU drops to 6-9 on the season, with two more matches remaining at the Lady Blues Classic. Tomorrow, the Bearcats have another doubleheader, as they face off against Angelo State and Tarleton State. SBU has faced both squads earlier in the season, falling 3-0 to Angelo State while at the Florida Southern Classic, and 3-2 to Tarleton at their own TexAnn Invitational. The first game against Angelo is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start, while Tarleton will take on the Bearcats at 5 p.m.
