Bearcat women drop contest at Fort Hays State 90-64

Hot shooting from outside carries Lady Tigers to victory

HAYS, Kan. -- The Fort Hays State Lady Tigers used 20 points each from Naomi Bancroft and Erica Biel and topped the SBU Bearcats, 90-64. SBU was led by Rachel Graves and Ashleigh Gallio with 14 points.

"Bancroft can really shoot it. They have several players that can hit from outside.," said SBU head coach J.C. Carter. "We held them to one trey in the second half, but by that point, the damage had already been done."

Courtney Heady also had 13 points for the Bearcats (3-11, 1-6 MIAA). Jasmine Sanford led SBU with nine rebounds while Gallio had four assists. Graves added five rebounds and three steals for the 'Cats.

The Lady Tigers were 24 of 26 from the foul line as compared to 5 of 7 for the Bearcats. Carter noted the stat in his postgame comments. "It's a toughness thing. We gave up too many second chance points. We need to work on our defense, especially our backside defense and blocking out."

After Fort Hays State (12-2, 5-2 MIAA) got out to a 9-3 lead, SBU came right back to tie the game. FHSU would get a five point lead before the 'Cats tied it again at 18. A three from Freddie Sims gave the Bearcats a 23-22 edge before the Lady Tigers would use a 16-5 run to go up for good. A three from Bancroft just before halftime gave the Lady Tigers gave FHSU their largest lead (47-33) of the first half.

Fort Hays would extend their lead in the second half before a three from Heady cut the deficit to 59-47 with 13 minutes left. The Lady Tigers would pull away over the last ten minutes of the game.

SBU returns home for a Thursday evening matchup with the Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center.
