#11 SBU Bearcats fall to #10 Fort Hays State Tigers

Tigers use big run to start second half for victory

The #11 SBU Bearcats fell on the road at #10 Fort Hays State 102-89. After leading 44-40 at halftime, the MIAA-leading Tigers (13-1, 7-0 MIAA) used a 30-7 run to start the second half for the victory. Matt Rogers led the Bearcats with 30 points, while Tomas Brock had 21 points and Ryan Dougherty tied his career high with 17 points.

"We've got competitors and winners," said SBU head coach Jeff Guiot. "They're never going to quit and they're always going to compete. I'm proud of their effort tonight."

The two teams were close early on before the Tigers would open up a 27-15 lead with with 10:23 left in the first half. Dougherty would hit three treys to bring the Bearcats back. Dougherty's third three cut the FHSU margin to 42-37 with 1:20 left and a conventional three-point play from Jacob French cut the lead to two points a minute later. The teams would head to the locker rooms with the Tigers on top 44-40.

During the Tigers' big run to start the second half, SBU head coach Jeff Guiot was ejected after two quick whistles from the officials. The Tigers would hit all four free throws and would go up by as much as 28 points before the Bearcats would stage a comeback. SBU would cut the lead down to just nine points, but seemlingly ran out of time before the they could get back into the game. Brock put up 16 points in the effort to close the gap, while 8 points came from Rogers.

"Our kids deserve better. You gotta give them a chance," added Guiot on the technicals. "Matt was taking a beating and I was standing up for him and our team."

Corbin Kuntzsch led Fort Hays with 33 points, including 12 of 14 from the free throw line.

SBU (14-3, 5-2 MIAA) returns home on Thursday to face the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks in a 7:30 p.m. contest from the Meyer Sports Center. The Bearcats have won 38 straight games at home, the second longest streak in Division II.
