BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The SBU Bearcat women played their fourth game in eight days and fell to the #6 Washburn Lady Blues 88-67. Chasity Prince hit four three-pointers to lead SBU with 12 points, one of three in double figures. Rachel Graves had 11 and Courtney Heady added 10 points. Graves also led the Bearcats with six rebounds while Ashleigh Gallio had a team high six assists.
Washburn (13-0, 7-0 MIAA) raced out to an early 8-0 lead and then pushed it to 14-2. SBU would stage a 12-4 run to cut the lead to 18-14, before Washburn would close the half on a 24-12 stretch, to lead at halftime 42-26. SBU improved in the second half, with Washburn outscoring the Bearcats, 46-41. Head coach J.C. Carter noted the reversal of fortunes, as compared to Saturday's game with Emporia State, when SBU led the Lady Hornets at halftime.
"It was the reverse of last time out," Carter said. "We played well in the second half but not in the first. They only outscored by five points in the second, and that was encouraging. Our intensity on defense was better in the second half and we shot better too. We just wanted to play in the second half and not worry about the score."
Washburn would tie a school record with 15 three-pointers, including six from Amanda Fessenden. Fessenden finished with 20 points, one of six WU players in double figures.
SBU made 14 of 19 from the foul line as compared to 7 of 8 for the Lady Blues, which pleased Carter. "We attacked well and were unselfish. We hit some open shots, but we need to work on our press and run through the pass."
SBU (3-10, 1-5 MIAA) will make the long trip to Hays, Kansas, on Saturday, January 9 to take on the Fort Hays State Lady Tigers, beginning at 2 p.m.
