BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The SBU Bearcat women fell to the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks 59-52. The Mavericks rallied after trailing at the half and by nine in the second half. SBU was led in scoring by Chasity Prince with 14 points and Courtney Heady with 12. Jasmine Sanford led the 'Cats with seven rebounds.
SBU led 31-26 at the break. UNO would tie the game early in the second half before the 'Cats would open up a nine-point edge (43-34 with 11:04 left). The Mavericks would outscore the Bearcats 25-9 down the stretch for the victory.
After hitting 5 of 13 from long range in the first half, the Bearcats missed all nine attempts in the second half and were held to 21 points. The Mavs outrebounded the Bearcats 39-34. SBU committed 17 turnovers to 16 from the Mavericks.
"Prince played pretty well. She's earning more minutes," said head coach J.C. Carter on his leading scorer. "Chasity is very skilled offensively and loves to play defense. Whitney Malone also did a phenomenal job defensively."
"Our help side defense wasn't great, but was better than the last few games," Carter added. "UNO shot decent most of the game, but we did force three shot clock violations in the first half. We've got to create a mindset of toughness and defense."
Sara Reeves led a balanced attack for the Mavericks (9-6, 4-4 MIAA). Reeves was the only Mav in double figures with 12 points but three others had nine points each for UNO.
SBU (3-12, 1-7 MIAA) is right back in action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Maryville to take on the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats at 1:30 p.m.
