PITTSBURG, Kan. -- SBU junior quarterback Steve Gachette and senior linebacker Jarred Schumpert were named recently to the 2009 Football Gazette All-Super Region Four Third Team.

Gachette, a native of Lehigh Acres, Fla., holds 15 school records including single game, season and career marks for attempts, completions, passing yards, touchdown passes, and total offense. Gachette was  named to the D2football.com All-Independents First Team and was a regional finalist for the Harlon Hill Award, which honors the nation's top Division II football player. In 2009, Gachette completed 61.6% of his passes for 3015 yards and a school record 28 touchdowns, while he ran for 975 net yards and 8 touchdowns on the season. His 3990 total offensive yards easily surpassed his previous school record of 3360 yards, set in 2008. He's also led the Bearcat offense to a national ranking of ninth in total offense. The Bearcats earned their first winning season since 2001 when they defeated Missouri S&T in the final week of the season.

SBU Football 2009
Schumpert, a native of Gilmer, Texas, led the Bearcats in total tackles for the fourth straight year, the only player in SBU history with that accomplishment. In 2009, he finished with 116 stops including 65 solos and 19 tackles for a loss. He also recorded four sacks and two interceptions. Schumpert competed Friday, January 8, in the Valero Cactus Bowl in Kingsville, Texas, an all-star game for D-II seniors. Schumpert recorded two tackles as he and his West team won 16-0.

A total of 93 players earned some form of Football Gazette All-Super Region Four honors. Players from 27 of the 34 football-playing schools in Super Region Four earned All- Region accolades.

This marks the seventh year Football Gazette has selected NCAA Division II All-Region teams. The national publication, an authority on small college football, has selected NCAA Division II All-America teams since 1988.
