SGF soccer story w/ Vanessa Roher interview

BOLIVAR, Mo. --
A goal from each of the Roher sisters, including the game winner in sudden-death overtime from Vanessa Roher, gave SBU a 4-3 win over Missouri Southern.

Senior forward Shannon Roher connected in the 10th minute to give SBU an early 1-0 lead, with the team's leading scorer, Jaymye Ross, earning the assist. The Bearcats were able to lengthen their lead in the 40th minute, when Jen Tenholder hooked a shot in off of a direct kick, and SBU went in at halftime up 2-0.

The game looked to be well in control, but Missouri Southern made their push in the second half. Just a minute after the second half kickoff, the Lions' Alicia Vonderheid snuck one past Bearcat keeper Megan Link to cut the lead in half, 2-1. SBU answered back, however, and in the 54th minute, senior defender Caitlin Tull's header scored off of Heidi Lewis' corner kick, and the 'Cats had a two goal lead once again. Missouri Southern was not done, however, and two quick goals in the 65th and 70th minutes tied the game at 3-3.

SBU dominated possession during the first ten minute half of extra time, getting three shots, but could not get one through. The Bearcats finally broke through in the 102nd minute, when Vanessa Roher took the pass from her sister Shannon, and hooked in a shot from the left corner of the box, just pass the arms of the Missouri Southern keeper.

SBU led during the extra time in shots, 4-1, and overall, 21-10, making this the fourth straight game the Bearcats have outshot their opponents. This was also the first overtime win for SBU since October 12, 2007, when they defeated a fifth-ranked Central Missouri squad on the road, 3-2.

The Bearcats, ranked last week at No. 8 in the South Central Regional, improved their record to 4-0-1 (2-0, MIAA), while the Lions fell to 2-4 (0-2 MIAA) on the season. Next up, SBU hits the road Saturday, September 19, to take on the green Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State; Northwest is currently ranked 6th in the region, with an MIAA record of 1-1, and 5-1 overall. Kickoff in Maryville is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
