Softball Bearcats drop close ones at MSU Invitational

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- The SBU softball Bearcats dropped two one-run contests on the second day of the Midwestern State Invitational, falling to Texas Woman's University, 5-4, and Lincoln University, 3-2.

In game one, TWU tallied two runs in the first before SBU came back with a solo run in the bottom half when McKenzie Mortimer scored on Nina Amaro Garcia's base hit. TWU scored three more times in the third inning. SBU would cut the deficit with three runs in the sixth. Sarah Brison doubled home two runs and would later score on a single by Mortimer.

Mortimer was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Catcher Stephanie Luciani also had two hits and Brison went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Josie Rose went the distance and struck out six but allowed eight hits and five earned runs.

Game two saw the Bearcats get one run in the first when Mortimer tripled to start the game and later scored on Amaro Garcia's single to left. Lincoln would grab two runs in the bottom of the fourth. SBU's Aleece Nalbandian drew a walk to score BreAnn Proctor in the top of the seventh, tying the game. But Lincoln would load the bases in the bottom of the seventh and win the game on base hit by Brianna Weber.

Katrina Munoz was 2-for-4 and stole her fifth base of the season. Nina Amaro Garcia went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Brittney Wood went the distance, striking out seven and allowing three runs.

SBU is now 4-7 on the season and takes on the host Midwestern State tomorrow at 11 a.m. to wrap up their action in the MSU Invitational. Live stats are available from the Midwestern State tourney site here.
