KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- Down ten points in the second half on the road, the SBU Bearcat women rallied to win their first MIAA game of the season, taking a 77-73 victory at Truman State. Courtney Heady led the Bearcats (3-8, 1-3 MIAA) with 18 points including five treys as SBU had season highs in field goal percentage, threes made and three-point percentage.
"We didn't get down when we were down ten," said head coach J.C. Carter. "We kept after it on defense and our energy level went up, from the bench to the players on the floor. I'm proud of how hard they worked. We've had good energy in practice and it's showing up in games. Our pressure is forcing teams into hurried shots and we're seeing them get fatigued down the stretch."
Heady led the Bearcats with 18 points including five of seven from three-point range. With the Bearcats down 50-40 with 14:35 left in second half, Rachel Graves and Heady would hit two treys each as the Bearcats rallied to claim the lead. Graves scored 17 including four of five from long range. The Bearcats hit a season high 14 three pointers out of 25 attempts, for another season high percentage of 56%. SBU also hit 53% from the field which was also a season high.
All ten players that saw action for the Bearcats scored at least two points and grabbed two rebounds. SBU outrebounded the Bulldogs (6-6, 1-4 MIAA) by 34-23 margin. Jasmine Sanford, Abbey Frazier and Chasity Prince led SBU with four boards each.
Truman led at halftime 38-37 despite 56% shooting from the field by the Bearcats. SBU continued to shoot well in the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs 40-35 behind 50% shooting. Breanna Daniels led the Bulldogs with 21 points.
SBU freshman Kourtni Williams tied her career high with nine points. Carter commented on his leading scorers. "Rachel held their best player (Laura Joya) to 11 points and also scored 17. Heady was so poised down the stretch and hit several big threes. Kourtni Williams is getting to the basket and has really stepped up lately."
SBU returns home and will open the the new year by hosting the #9 Emporia State Lady Hornets on Saturday. The game tips at 5:30 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center.
