QUINCY, Ill. -- The SBU Bearcats rallied late against Quincy, cutting the lead to four points, before the Lady Hawks pulled away to win 71-59 in the championship game of the Quincy Tip-Off Tournament. SBU (1-1) was led in scoring by senior Rachel Graves with 19 points. Graves hit five three-pointers for the second straight night and was named to the all-tournament team. Newcomers Ashleigh Gallio and Abbey Frazier were also in double figures for the Bearcats with 13 and 11 points each. Gallio added seven assists while Frazier led with seven rebounds, including five offensive boards.
"We only got to the free throw line six times, which is something we must get better at," said coach J.C. Carter. "We shot well again from outside, but we need to have more post presence. Freshman Abbey Frazier did well tonight. Rachel Graves had another good night for us. When we cut it to four, we missed some shots we probably should have made."
Quincy (3-0) was led by Courtney Shuman by with 18 points and 11 points. The Lady Hawks led 39-29 at the half and outscored SBU 32-30 in the second half. The Lady Hawks extended their lead to 57-40 with nine minutes left in the contest. SBU would use a 15-2 run to cut the margin to four with five minutes left. Frazier and Graves each had six points during the Bearcat comeback. Quincy would end the game with a 12-4 streak for the victory.
SBU will return home for this Tuesday night's home opener with Northeastern (Okla.) State, beginning at 7 p.m. SBU will rematch with Quincy on Friday, November 27, at 6 p.m. in the SBU Thanksgiving Classic. Saturday, November 28, SBU will host Drury at 8 p.m., in the first matchup with the Lady Panthers since 2001.
