SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The third-ranked SBU Bearcats were upset on the road by a hot-shooting Drury Panthers squad, falling 99-86. Matt Rogers led the Bearcats with 23 points and eight rebounds while battling foul trouble. Thijin Moses had 21 points and Tristan Steele added 14 points for the Bearcats (3-1).
"You can't win any games when you give up 99 points and commit 21 turnovers," said SBU head coach Jeff Guiot. "It was Drury's night and they played really well. We ignored the scouting reports and couldn't guard (Alex) Hall. He got going and really responded when we took the lead late."
The Panthers (1-0) were led by Alex Hall with 33 points. Hall tied a Drury record with eight three-pointers. Chris Parks added 23 points for the Panthers. Drury had 28 assists to 19 for the Bearcats. SBU also had 21 turnovers to just 11 for Drury. DU shot 56% from the field for the game, including 62% in the second half. SBU was 52% from the field and shot 48% from long range (14 of 29). Drury also shot 50% from long range (12 of 24).
The Panthers started strong with a 14-8 lead, before SBU battled back with a 13-2 run to lead 21-16 with seven minutes gone in the first half. Both teams continued their hot shooting first half before the Panthers would close the half with 13-4 streak to lead at halftime 48-39.
The Panthers would lead by as much as 10 points through much of the second half before SBU would rally. A trey by Moses cut the Drury margin to 80-75. Tristan Steele would follow a three of his own to trim the lead to two points. Later a steal by Steele led to a three from Rogers, giving the Bearcats their only lead of the second half at 83-82. The Panthers would answer right back with three consecutive treys from Hall and would pull away for the victory.
"This was a great college basketball environment," added Guiot. "Our guys battled back after trailing in the second half. But they've got to learn overcome everything that happens on the road. It's early and we need to bounce back. Great teams learn from situations like this. The true test will be how we respond on Thursday and then this Saturday on the road again."
The Bearcats return home on Thursday night when they host MidAmerica Nazarene at 7 p.m. SBU then heads to Dallas, Texas to take on Dallas Baptist on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
