Volleyball Bearcats fall in final 2009 road match at #9 Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan. -- In their final road contest of 2009, the SBU Bearcat volleyball team fell to the ninth-ranked Emporia State Hornets in straight sets (25-17, 25-21, 25-11).

Ashley Jurgensmeyer hit .412 on the night and led the Bearcats (11-23, 4-14 MIAA) with eight kills. Joanna Granzow added seven kills and had a .294 attack percentage. Lauren Noble had 18 digs and Brianna Wallace had 21 assists for the Bearcats. Arica Shepard had 15 digs and 11 kills for Emporia State.

Emporia State (28-4, 15-3 MIAA) led 14-12 in the first set and used an 11-5 run to close out the set. ESU led 5-0 in the second set before the Bearcats turned things around to lead 10-7. ESU would answer with a run of their own to go up 14-11. The teams would stay close the rest of the set with the Hornets winning 25-21. With the score at 11-7 in favor of ESU in the third, an 11-2 run sealed the match for the Hornets.

SBU is at home for their final two matches of 2009. Friday, November 13, they will host Missouri Southern at 7 p.m. On Saturday, November 14, they will host Pittsburg State at 2 p.m., where they will honor senior Kelsey Stewart prior to the match.
