ST. JOSEPH, Mo. --
The SBU Bearcats were unable to end their losing skid against Missouri Western, falling in their fourth straight match, 3-2. The Bearcat defense only allowed four shots on goal by the Western attack, but three of them ended in goals for the Griffons. Griffon forward Abby Widrig contributed on each of the three Western goals, scoring the first in the 14th minute, assisting teammate Ashlyn Castillo on the second goal in the 18th, and scoring her second of the game in the 29th minute.

Less than one third of the way throught the match, the Bearcats found themselves in a 3-0 hole, but were not willing to give up the game. SBU's Lindsey Boden put the 'Cats on the board in the 38th minute, off of a corner kick from Kelly Issac. The goal was Boden's fourth of the season, and Issac collected her third assist on the year from the pass. Less than three minutes later, freshman forward Taylor Vick stuck a header received from Vanessa Roher just past the goalie for her first goal of her collegiate career. In just 12 minutes, SBU took a seemingly insurmountable 3-0 deficit, and before the end of the first half, climbed back within striking distance with a 3-2 halftime score.

After scoring five goals in the first half, both offenses slowed in the second, and neither side were able to put one more in the back of the net. SBU outshot the Griffons, 6-5 in the second half, and 19-9 overall, but the early mistakes proved to be too much to overcome.

The Bearcats fell to 5-5 on the season, and 3-5 in the MIAA, while Missouri Western improved to 5-8 on the year, and 3-6 in conference play. SBU tries to rebound from their current skid this Saturday, October 10th, at MIAA-leading Truman State. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
