SBU NOTES

JOPLIN, Mo. --
The SBU Bearcats have a bit of a breather this week, with only one match and this weekend off, as they wrap up a three-game road trip in Joplin against the Missouri Southern Lions. SBU has struggled of late, losing their last five games, although two were close one-goal affairs. Freshman Taylor Vick broke through for her first goal as a Bearcat last week against Missouri Western; the forward now has five points on the year, with three assists. Jaymye Ross continues to lead the offense, as her 38 shots this season ranks her tied for fourth among the MIAA. Vick and Ross both are tied for ninth in the conference in assists.

Defensively, the Bearcats have turned to somewhat of a keeper-by-committee approach to the net, as three different goalies have seen action over SBU's last three games. Junior Emily Hamilton was in goal in the 'Cats last match against Truman, where she collected five saves. Hamilton also saw action in the match against Missouri Western, splitting time with Johanna Olsson. Olsson, who also is a member of the Bearcat tennis team, started the first match against Truman on October 3, before Megan Link came in during the second half.

THE COACHES AND THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Rob Podeyn is in his first season as Bearcat head coach (57-55-8 in seven years total), after leading the Northwood University (Texas) program since 2006, where he won two conference championships.

Trevor Wachsman is in his seventh season as head coach of the Lions. Under Wachsman's guidance, Missouri Southern had enjoyed three consecutive seasons of 11 wins or more that ended with last season's 6-12-1 mark. SBU also leads the all-time series over the Lions, 12-9-2.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFONS & BULLDOGS
SBU defeated the Lions earlier this season at home, a 4-3 thriller, in which senior Bearcat Vanessa Roher hit the game winning goal in overtime. After that match, the Lions went on a three-game skid, getting shut out by the top three teams in the MIAA standings: Northwest Missouri, Nebraska-Omaha and Truman State. Missouri Southern rebounded since then to defeat Missouri Western and Emporia by identical 2-1 scores before losing their last game to Washburn, 2-0.

The Lions are led on offense by a duo of forwards, Stephanies Heines and Michelle Dimza. Heines and Dimza lead the team with three goals and seven points apiece. As of late, the Lions attack has been spread across the roster. No one player has scored twice in the last six Southern goals, dating back the the first matchup wtih SBU. Missouri Southern ranks second in the MIAA in saves per game, with 5.25, most of which came from sophomore keeper Randi Russell (5.09 saves/game).
