ROLLA, Mo. – The SBU Bearcats were defeated by the Missouri S&T Miners, 63-23, to close the 2008 campaign.
SBU ends the season with a 5-6 record, which is the most wins by an SBU team since the 2001 season.
The Bearcats picked up 469 yards today on 85 snaps. They added 24 more first downs to their record season total. SBU was 3 for 3 in the red zone,
All of the first-half scoring came in the first quarter.
The Miners got out quickly to a 21-3 lead on touchdown drives of 41, 70, and 56 yards, two of which ended in touchdown passes from S&T's quarterback, Brad Guidry.
SBU's Steve Gachette hit Johnnie King on a 65-yard touchdown, cutting the Miner lead to 21-10, with 1:24 left in the first quarter, which stood as the halftime score. King caught 10 passes today for 138 yards. His touchdown catch gives him nine for the season, tying him with Nick Smart for most touchdown catches in a single sedason.
The Bearcats got the ball to open the 2nd half, but Gachette was picked off on the first play from scrimmage, leading to an S&T touchdown, which gave the Miners a 28-10 lead.
SBU responded with their best drive of the day that went for 60 yards on 13 plays, capped by 1-yard scoring run by Clint Carroz, cutting the Miner lead to 18-28.
From that point, S&T's Brad Guidry tacked on four more touchdown passes, giving him seven for the day, which set a single-game record for the Miners.
Gachette added a touchdown run with two minutes left, making the score 56-23.
The Miners tacked on a final touchdown with a minute to play, giving S&T a 63-23 lead, which stood as the game's final.
In addition to the 30+ records set or tied by the Bearcats this season, today's game was the 44th consecutive game in which the Bearcats have not been shut out, which is a new record.
