Bearcat Soccer Rallies For Tie At Nationally-Ranked Truman

10/4/2008 6:04:00 PM

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The SBU Bearcats, scoreless for 63 minutes, fought back to a 2-2 tie at Truman State.

After a scoreless first half by both teams, Truman's Riley Mahn scored on assists from Katie Reuck and Jessica Wiegert. The Bulldogs struck again just nine minutes later, when Brigitte Pohren scored an unassisted goal in the 59th minute, giving nationally-ranked Truman a 2-0 lead.

But Bearcats clawed back into the match at 63:59, when SBU's Nicola Cousins picked up her 11th goal of the season. Krysten Clardy shot the Bearcats to the tie, with her first goal of the season, at 75:14.

"I'm very proud of our team," said SBU's head coach, Benjamin Wade. "We came back on the road against a nationally-ranked opponent. It would have been easy to put our heads down, but we didn't. It was a critical game for us. Truman is very quick, athletic, and strong. I've said all season that our last three games would be very important, and we went 1-1-1 during that stretch. It's a great feeling - especially considering the spectacular way we came back in that match."

The Bearcats were out-shot by the Bulldogs, 24-6, but only 8-4 in shots on goal.

The tie moves SBU's record to 6-1-1, as the Bearcats return home for four straight contests, beginning with Missouri Western on October 9 (4:00).
